Just the FAQ’s (Frequently Asked Questions)
What is KidsQuest?
KidsQuest is a weekly worship service for the 1st – 5th graders in our church and community. It is offered at 9:00am and 10:45am each Sunday.
What is the Bible Talk?
The Bible Talk is the sermon in KidsQuest. God’s Word is taught clearly, engagingly and creatively. The Bible Talk is the heart of the service, where we learn to hear from God’s Word together as a community.
What are all dramas and puppet sketches for?
The Bible Talk and all of the sketches and elements around it are designed as a complete teaching portion of the service. Each sketch, puppet presentation, and video is designed to illustrate one or several of the points made in the Bible Talk. Many of the sketches are funny, entertaining and sometimes exciting.
Why does the offering look like a game?
We deliberately include every element of worship in KidsQuest, in order to train our children in the elements of worship. The Offering is just one example of how we incorporate an element of worship, but in a way that is engaging for kids. We always explain that the offering is an opportunity for us to worship God by giving back a portion of what He has given to us. We always pray for the offering. And, while it may look like a race or contest, there is never a winner or loser, and the action both engages the kids in that portion of worship and expedites the collection of the offering.
Isn’t this just entertainment? Shouldn’t we just teach them from the Bible? Does it really have to be this elaborate?
Entertainment is a significant part of our culture, with many benefits and some real drawbacks. Many times when people ask if this is entertainment, what they are asking (in more precise terms) is this: is this only entertainment? NO. KidsQuest is designed to be a worship and teaching program. We work very hard to make all of the elements work together to teach the elements of worship and the Bible lesson. We want the kids who come to KidsQuest to be attentive and absorbing as much as possible. Therefore, we make the program as engaging to the imagination as possible. The more their imaginations are engaged by humor, wonder, and the various creative approaches we take, the more likely the lessons are to “stick”. This approach to teaching the Bible may well be entertaining, but it is not merely entertainment.
Will KidsQuest draw kids away from Discipleship?
One of the measures we have for the success of KidsQuest is by how many more kids are getting involved in the other programs we offer in KIDS Town. Some kids may decide that they prefer KidsQuest, but we know that Discipleship is where the best life-on-life impact will be made. For that reason, KidsQuest will always promote and support Discipleship, and encourage kids to get involved.
Why are videos playing before the service? Why do I see beach balls being tossed around before the service?
We offer videos, music and interactive games as the kids are gathering for the service because we want anyone who attends to be relaxed and comfortable. We also want to give the kids something to be engaged in as we wait to begin the service, allowing for everyone to find a spot as we prepare to worship together.
Why is the music so loud?
We know that there are sensory issues for many kids who attend KidsQuest, and we try to be sensitive to that. We also must adjust our volume based on attendance, as the more people in the room, the more sound is absorbed. Without going into too many details, we want to ensure that everyone can hear well in the room.
I see kids in the sound booth. Is it wise to have kids using all this equipment?
The kids you see in the sound booth have had more training on that equipment than most of the adult volunteers you see anywhere else in the church! Any kid who helps with our technical team is a part of the larger KIDS Town University, a program where we train kids to be part of the programs they participate in. From worship leading to stage managing, they get a head start on serving as active members of our church, and it all starts at KTU.
